WCIS - 2016, Day 3

Friday 14th October

Yesterday afternoon we were treated to some great flying from the Dynamic 2-Way teams and by the end of the day were able to complete all three qualifying rounds. Here's a shot of some of the Dynamic Judges - clearly deep in discussion! As we've seen, the audience is a great barometer of performance and their enthusiasm is contagious. The addition of the free round added another measure to the already exciting flying.

It's easy to forget just how tiring it is to tunnel fly and yesterday we witnessed how fatigue affected one particular junior competitor. When you consider that Canada's Malachi DeAth, who's 12 years of age, is competing in the 4-Way Junior team (Tunnel Vision) as well as being a Freestyle Junior competitor, he shouldn't beat himself up for having a momentary lapse of concentration during part of his routine in yesterday's Round 2 Freestyle. It happens to seniors alike and as his 4-Way Junior team is currently in joint 3rd position, there's even less reason to admonish yourself so hard.

These youngsters are the sport's future, so Malachi be proud of your performance - as we are of you!

11.30hrs:  The morning continues at quite a pace and we now have Round 6 of FS in the bag, where we see that France's FS 2 have taken the top slot for themselves, being 2 points ahead of Belgium's Hayabusa - 178 and 176 respectively. In Round 5 they were neck and neck in first place, but there's no letting up the pace for either team.

We're currently being entertained by the Solo Freestylers, Senior and Junior, whilst they perform Round 5 - which is one of the 2 compulsory rounds they have to fly.

13.00hrs: Here's the current scores at Round 6 in Formation Skydiving :  The 4-Way Female teams from France and United Kingdom continue to keep their respective positions, whilst France increases their margin. As for the VFS teams, The Golden Knights are back in 3rd position behind Russia's Flystation, whereas USA's SDC Core continues to widen the gap over Russia. The 4-Way Juniors are also making their presence felt and one can see that the French teams are clearly chips off the old block, gaining audience respectalthough Canada is keeping a notable distance in front.

During a brief interlude in the afternoon's proceedings it became necessary to clean the glass of the tunnel - ably accomplished by several members of Flyspot staff.

Men can do housework!

Such is the pace here it takes a while to  catch up with the positions of the movers and shakers in the various events. For example in the Freestyle event we're at Round 6 with just Round 7 to fly tomorrow, with a possibility of a Jump Off round. A Jump Off is not beyond the realms of possibiity seeing as there is currently 0.1 point between Leonid and Inka - the current World Champion. They each have a beauty of performance unique to themselves, yet the hidden gem that is Singapore's Kyra Poh has a higher score - averaging 9.05 - than her senior mentors. Close on Kyra's heels is Poland's Andrzej Soltykwho is being chased by his big sister Aleksandra. Don't you just love family competitors!

19.00hrs:  We're in a packed auditorium watching the Tournament rounds of the 2-Way Dynamic event - a fast and furious, crowd-pleasing event! The audience are enthusiastic in their appreciation of the performing teams. With too few NACs for a Junior Dynamic 2-Way, the juniors in this event are competing alongside the seniors on a like for like basis. The tournament will bring the competitive flying to a close for today.
