The IGC GNSS Flight Recorder Approval Committee (GFAC) was formed by the IGC on 18 March 1995 in response to the need to develop comprehensive specifications for GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) units that measure the performance in glider flights and at IGC international competitions. In 1995 the IGC approved the issuance of the first edition of Annex B to the Sporting Code for Gliding which gave GFAC the authority to test and evaluate GNSS Flight Recorders on behalf of IGC and to draft, finalise and issue documents giving IGC-approval for the use of such recorders for flights to IGC standards of evidence. The first type of recorder was submitted to GFAC for testing later in 1995 and FAI on behalf of IGC issued the first IGC-approval documents in January 1996. In the subsequent years the volunteers on the GFAC have devoted themselves to the task of ensuring specifications are competent and appropriate for all levels of the flight verification, including the security necessary to protect the integrity of World Records and other high performance flights. A wide range of GNSS units are now available for use in the sport of gliding, all meticulously evaluated by the members of GFAC to ensure they comply with the standards required. For their initiatives in creating the secure GNSS Flight Recorder system supporting gliding competitions, records and badges world-wide and for their dedication to the continuing task of evaluating security standards and Flight Recorders, the members of GFAC are worthy recipients of the FAI Group Diploma of Honour.
