Main decisions taken at the 2014 CIAM Annual Meeting
The 2014 Annual Meeting of the FAI Aeromodelling Commission (CIAM) was held on 11 and 12 April 2014 in Lausanne, Switzerland. The CIAM Bureau Members met a day earlier at the same location.
Friday evening’s Open Forum discussion
After the 2013 success another “Open Forum” had been scheduled and complimented by many delegates attending.
Manufacturers had been invited to present and discuss technology currently offered to aeromodellers via the product line of the company they represent in respect of telemetry, gyros, stabilizing systems etc. and their thoughts about using this technology in FAI competitions.
The advantages of this technology are:
- Taking workload from the pilot by the use of intelligent systems during flight
- Optimizing the performance of aircraft
- New Tasks on top of aerodynamics
- Research of accurate sensor technologies
- Development of autopilot algorithm
- Adjustment of parameters
These would have the following impact on competitions:
- Aerodynamic design will change
- „Feeling the plane“ will be replaced by feedback of sensor values
- Pilot skills will be replaced by intelligent electronics
- The most sophisticated flight control system will win
The potential conflict is obvious:
- Give pilots the chance to benefit from state-of-the-art technology, but without being suspected of using technologies that are not allowed during competition
The likely solution being a “competition mode” to reduce the possible functionality to the one which is allowed by the rules.
Clearly, this technology is going to influence other airsports as well and needs careful monitoring.
Besides the Sporting Code proposals that were adopted, here are the main decisions that were taken during the meeting:
