1st Ever Hike and Fly World Championships to be held in Spain
The first-ever FAI World Paragliding Hike and Fly Championship will take place in Panticosa, Spain, from June 6 to June 13, 2027. The event is supported by the Royal Spanish Aeronautical Federation, Club Catalunya Vol Lliure, the Panticosa City Council, and the Provincial Council of Huesca. It is organized by David Polo, who has led many Hike and Fly events in the Pyrenees and Lope Morales, one of Spain’s most experienced FAI event organizers, including the 2024 PG XC European Championship. The third key team member is Iñigo Redín, the renowned X-Pyr race director.
Panticosa enjoys a mountain climate, characterized by cold winters and mild summers, creating ideal conditions for free flight. Its proximity to the high mountains in the north, such as Midi d’Ossau and Garmo Negro, provides exceptional thermals and atmospheric stability during the summer, allowing for long and safe flights. The region has favorable meteorological conditions, with average temperatures in June ranging from 20-25°C and over 200 flyable days per year.
Geography and Terrain
Panticosa is located in the Tena Valley, at the heart of the Pyrenees, surrounded by high-altitude peaks. To the north, the towering mountains of the Pyrenees enable high-altitude and long-distance flights, while to the south, the Pre-Pyrenees provide an alternative flying area, making it possible to fly even when conditions in the higher mountains are unstable.
This diverse landscape, with varying relief and microclimates, ensures that pilots can always find favorable flying conditions. The take-off areas are situated at altitudes ranging from 1,400 m to 3,000 m, allowing launches from multiple locations across the valley.
Flying Area and Competition Tasks
Panticosa is a renowned competition site and a prime location for long cross-country flights in the Pyrenees.
It covers SW, W, NW, N, and NE wind directions, offering versatile flying opportunities.
The take-off elevation ranges from 1,400 m to 3,000 m above sea level.
The alpine valley provides multiple high-altitude launch points, ensuring optimal paragliding conditions.
The spacious landing zones at the base of the valley allow for safe and easy landings, even for long-distance flights.
The combination of high-altitude take-offs, diverse terrain, and accessible landing areas makes Panticosa an outstanding venue for paragliding competitions.
